Throughout the book Reese tells childhood stories and describes how strong southern women - especially her Grandmother - have influenced her, making her the person she is today. I’ve lived in Michigan for most of my life so all I really know about the south is my experience from a few trips I have taken to Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina - and from religiously reading Southern Living every month for the past 10 years (the only magazine I cannot live without). The minute you open this book you realize it is more than just a book to cook from. The photographs are breathtaking and the stories are heartwarming. Whiskey in a Teacup is more than a cookbook, it is a memoir filled with family, food, and all things southern like monograms, biscuits, hot rollers, wallpaper and quilts. Reece Witherspoon’s Whiskey in a Teacup is filled with southern charm.

You don’t know whether you can trust her and that is fine – that is entertaining – but I almost didn’t really care what was going to happen to either of them. Karen is better, a stronger character but I didn’t really warm to her. Tom is not a likeable figure – a bit weak, a bit dithery and a little flat. Separately, I wasn’t that keen on our two leads. The pace was still brisk and there are revelations made but it did not quite live up to its early promise. Maybe I’ve just read too many similar books lately but the ending was not a particular surprise. Unfortunately, it has a disappointing final third. Then the pace settles down a bit and there is a lot of information gathering in the middle third but it moves along swiftly enough. A Stranger in the House starts with a pulse-pounding prologue and a gripping, fast-paced first third and I was really hooked to begin with. All honest readers, no matter their age, who have their hearts and minds open to understanding and appreciating the wonders of the natural world that surround us can easily read this story. Stikki is too adorable (the squirrel) / (the book), and if you are not a huge fan of children’s books, worry not. Wood is more than just a writer that can capture your heart with her books, but also a masterful artist with a skill to make her stories visually attractive as well. But what blew me away are thirty-five fantastic illustrations drawn by the author herself. Just like GoldenEars, it enchanted me with beautiful and detailed descriptions of Stikki’s world and environment. I had a good feeling while waiting for an ARC to drop in my mailbox and after reading Stikki, that good feeling remained. Wood, so volunteering to be her early reader of Stikki the Squirrel was a logical thing to do. But I do read animal fiction, and I have read two previous (AMAZING!) YA GoldenEars books by Jane H. To make one thing clear, I usually do not read children’s literature.
